Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
EnCompass designed and delivered the Preventing and Responding to GBV course for USAID’s Gender Development Hub (GenDev). I was the activity lead and co-designer for this course when it was updated in 2024 after being initially designed in 2016. In addition to updating all technical materials, I also oversaw the development of new material and activities for emerging topics. Since this is an emotionally heavy course, I integrated wellness and self-care activities throughout the course, including a reflection journal, stretch breaks, and mindfulness exercises.
This week-long course explores GBV from both a personal and a programmatic standpoint. The course equips participants to integrate GBV into USAID’s various technical sectors, in line with the US Strategy to Prevent and Respond to GBV. Throughout the week, participants learn how GBV manifests in their technical sectors by exploring case studies, collaborating during small group activities, and doing individual work. The course has an action learning component that asks participants to apply what they learned in the classroom to a project they are working on. Participants come together virtually 3 months after the in-person workshop to share their projects and learnings.
I’ve had the privilege of also facilitating this course, both in the US and in Senegal.
Interviewer Training for the Service Provision Assessment (SPA) Survey
This immersive, 3-week long training is for interviewers collecting data for a facility-based health survey. To make this training more engaging, increase retention, and hone interviewer observation skills, I re-designed over half of the sessions. After the re-design, data showed that interviewers made 30% less mistakes entering data than in previous surveys thus increasing data collection quality. Below are some of the materials I designed for some of the sessions.
